The humanoid robotics sector may be on the brink of a significant breakthrough as Chinese firms rapidly advance in the field of embodied intelligence. The spotlight was recently on Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games, where Chinese-developed robots showcased remarkable abilities, even surpassing human records in some sporting events. Notably, they outperformed Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second record for the 100-meter sprint and Wayde van Niekerk’s 43.03-second 400-meter record, highlighting the swift progress made by these robots.
This rapid development is fueling intense competition among Chinese robotics companies and professionals aiming to become leaders in the burgeoning industry. The question now is whether humanoid robotics is nearing its “iPhone moment”—a phrase coined by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in 2023, referring to a pivotal technological breakthrough that propels an innovation from a nascent idea into mainstream adoption, thereby transforming industries and user experiences.
Wang Xingxing, the founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, one of China’s top humanoid robot manufacturers, provided a measured perspective on when such a breakthrough might occur in embodied intelligence. Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 20, Wang suggested that this tipping point could be reached within two to three years, though under a slower development pace, it might take up to five to ten years.
Wang’s comments came on the heels of a significant milestone for Unitree, which made its debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market just the day before the conference. The company experienced a remarkable surge, with shares closing 460 percent higher, underscoring the growing interest and investment in the humanoid robotics sector.
