China has marked a significant milestone in its space endeavors with the maiden flight of its Long March 12B carrier rocket, which took off successfully on Monday. This launch highlights the country’s advancing capabilities in space technology, as the rocket successfully entered its predetermined orbit after lifting off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The mission also involved the deployment of the 10th batch of Spacesail Constellation communication satellites, expanding China’s satellite network.

The Long March 12B, standing at approximately 72 meters tall, is noted as China’s most potent single-body rocket to date. The two-stage launch vehicle boasts 10 liquid oxygen and kerosene-fueled engines, delivering an impressive 800 metric tons of thrust during liftoff. This power enables the rocket to carry payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit. The development of this rocket commenced in September 2024, with numerous advanced features integrated to enhance its performance and efficiency, such as high-performance propulsion components and lightweight structures.

Efforts are underway by engineers to conduct further tests aimed at recovering and reusing the rocket’s first-stage booster. If these tests prove successful, a reusable version of the Long March 12B could be operational in the next few years, which would mark a significant step forward in the sustainability of China’s space missions.

The launch not only signifies technological progress but also serves to expand the Spacesail Constellation project. This growing satellite network is designed to provide global broadband internet services from low-Earth orbit. To date, over 160 satellites have been launched as part of the initiative, with an ambitious goal of deploying more than 10,000 satellites by 2030, underscoring China’s commitment to enhancing global satellite internet coverage.

The successful launch of the Long March 12B underscores China’s burgeoning commercial space sector and its aspirations to play a leading role in the global satellite internet industry. As the project progresses, it reflects China’s strategic focus on leveraging space technology to meet both national and international communications needs.
