Taiwan is set to amplify its contribution to sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific by capitalizing on its strengths in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation, according to President William Lai. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability in Taipei, Lai emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to advancing sustainability through resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity. The forum, which brings together businesses and organizations from across Asia, focuses on clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living.
As part of its sustainability strategy, the Taiwanese government is prioritizing improvements in urban resilience, energy security, and the expansion of renewable energy sources. Efforts are underway to enhance the power grid and energy storage capabilities, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future. Additionally, Taiwan is implementing a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy that includes technological and financial initiatives. This includes the initiation of carbon fee collections to support emissions reduction efforts.
To facilitate the transition of businesses toward digitalization and net-zero operations, Taiwan plans to establish a NT$100 billion fund over the next eight years. This substantial financial commitment is designed to support companies in adopting sustainable practices. Furthermore, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises are receiving additional backing through a diversified development program, ensuring that businesses of all sizes can participate in and benefit from the shift towards sustainability.
Taiwan’s strategy leverages its expertise in semiconductors, information technology, and precision manufacturing to foster sustainable growth. The government aims to use these sectors not only to drive domestic sustainability but also to contribute to broader global sustainability efforts. By integrating these technological strengths with its sustainability goals, Taiwan seeks to position itself as a leader in the regional and global push towards a more sustainable future.
