At the third Taiwan-Europe Chip Innovation Forum held in Antwerp, Belgium, Taiwan showcased its semiconductor prowess alongside a broad spectrum of technological capabilities. The two-day event saw the participation of representatives from four Taiwanese research institutions, highlighting their expertise in areas such as semiconductor research, high-performance computing, instrumentation, and technologies designed to withstand earthquakes in chip production.
This forum was a collaborative effort between Taiwan’s semiconductor research institute and the Belgium-based research organization imec. It centered on the exploration of advanced technologies, research, talent development, and the enhancement of cooperation between Taiwan and Europe. Taiwan’s objective is to deepen its semiconductor ties with Europe, moving beyond traditional manufacturing and design partnerships to foster a more comprehensive collaboration within the entire technology ecosystem.
Taiwanese officials pointed out that Europe’s strengths in basic science and research nicely complement Taiwan’s capabilities in rapid manufacturing and commercialization. Such synergies could lead to cross-border research and development initiatives involving both universities and industry players from both regions.
Additionally, the forum underscored the importance of talent development. Taiwan’s scholarship programs have already facilitated the arrival of over 500 European students to study semiconductor manufacturing in Taiwan. Expanding these educational initiatives could significantly bolster long-term academic and industrial connections between Taiwan and Europe.
The forum attracted hundreds of attendees from both Taiwanese and European academic and industrial sectors, signaling a growing interest in strengthening ties and cooperation within the semiconductor industry.
