Apple is poised to make a significant impact on the foldable smartphone industry with its anticipated launch of a foldable iPhone. This move is expected to invigorate a market that has recently experienced a slowdown. Despite a decline of 8% in global foldable smartphone shipments during the first half of 2026, market analysts predict a robust recovery in the latter half. Shipments for 2026 are projected to reach approximately 23 million units, with continued growth into 2027.
Industry experts forecast that Apple will quickly capture a considerable portion of the foldable market following the debut of its first foldable device. According to Smart Analytics Global, Apple could occupy 25% of global foldable shipments by the end of 2026, potentially increasing to about 41% by 2027. The introduction of Apple’s foldable iPhone could potentially transform the competitive landscape, putting pressure on established players like Samsung, Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
Although Apple’s entry is highly anticipated, initial supply constraints are expected due to the complexities of manufacturing foldable devices. The device’s projected price, exceeding $2,000, might also restrict its demand and availability at the initial stage. Consequently, Apple may choose to launch the foldable iPhone in selected markets before expanding its global reach.
Research firm IDC suggests that Apple’s participation in the foldable segment could make it one of the fastest-growing areas in the smartphone industry. The firm forecasts Apple might ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, securing roughly 40% of the global market share. The overall foldable smartphone market is expected to grow, with projections of 22.9 million units in 2026, marking a 12.6% increase, and approximately 27 million units in 2027, representing an 18% growth.
Reports indicate that Apple’s inaugural foldable model could feature a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch main foldable display, enhanced by Touch ID, an A20 Pro chip utilizing a 2-nanometer process, and dual 48-megapixel cameras. Should Apple navigate through the manufacturing challenges and manage its high pricing, its entry could provide a substantial boost to the foldable smartphone category, establishing Apple as a dominant force in the market within a short span.
