Taiwan’s representative office in Papua New Guinea is continuing its operations despite an order from the Papua New Guinea government to shut it down, according to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry. The office, led by Taiwanese representative Chiu Chen-yu, remains in communication with officials from Papua New Guinea’s Department of Foreign Affairs, and no significant disruptions have been observed.
In July, Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko announced the government’s decision to close Taiwan’s representative office. Taiwan, which was not consulted prior to this decision, has formally protested the order. The Foreign Ministry in Taiwan has stated that it is preparing responses to various potential developments and is actively seeking dialogue with Papua New Guinea to address the situation.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry is also looking to garner support from other countries to facilitate discussions aimed at keeping the representative office open. This move underscores Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining its international presence despite diplomatic challenges.
