In a call for a more balanced and fair global order, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for joint efforts to create a multipolar world, where Global South countries have a stronger influence in international affairs. Speaking on September 1 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Xi highlighted the irreversible shift in global power dynamics driven by the emergence of the Global South.
Xi advocated for sovereign equality, mutual respect, and multilateralism as the cornerstones of international relations. He urged that countries, regardless of their size, power, or wealth, should enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and adhere to common rules. Furthermore, he pressed major powers to honor international norms and uphold the rule of law.
Highlighting the importance of inclusive global governance, Xi called for strengthening the United Nations’ role and ensuring that international matters are resolved through wider participation. He encouraged nations to prioritize development, embrace openness and cooperation, and bridge gaps in digital and artificial intelligence advancements to ensure technological progress benefits a broader spectrum of countries.
Xi pointed to the successful 25-year history of the SCO as a model of cooperation among nations with diverse political systems, cultures, and development levels. He pushed for enhanced partnerships within the SCO Plus framework and advocated for increased cooperation across Asia and Europe through high-quality Belt and Road initiatives.
This address follows the introduction of the Global Governance Initiative by Xi at last year’s SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin. According to China, this initiative has garnered support from several countries and international organizations over the past year.
