Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, has underscored the critical need for ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense amid increasing military pressure from China. With tensions rising in the region, Yui highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to boosting its defense budget and enhancing its ability to address potential security challenges independently. He emphasized that while international support is valuable, Taiwan must prioritize its own defense capabilities.

A proposed $14 billion weapons package for Taiwan is currently being reviewed by the U.S. administration. This proposal has garnered backing from U.S. lawmakers who view the enhancement of Taiwan’s defense systems as a pressing concern, given China’s growing military activities in the area. Yui argued that the scale of military support should reflect the level of threat, noting the frequent Chinese military exercises, warship maneuvers, and aircraft operations near Taiwan.

Yui reiterated that Taiwan’s primary objective is to ensure its security and uphold its democratic values through defensive strategies. He stressed that the island’s approach is geared towards maintaining peace and stability in the face of potential aggression. While the proposed arms deal is still under consideration, Taiwan remains focused on strengthening its defensive posture.

U.S. officials have affirmed that Washington’s policy regarding Taiwan remains consistent and that supporting Taiwan’s security is a crucial aspect of bilateral relations. Despite regional tensions, Taiwan has expressed confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States, recognizing the importance of their long-term collaboration for regional stability.
