Regularly heading to bed with wet hair might seem harmless, but dermatologists warn it could have detrimental effects on your scalp and hair over time. Sleeping with a damp scalp creates an environment conducive to the growth of fungi and microbes, potentially leading to scalp issues such as itching, irritation, dandruff-like flakes, and excessive oiliness.

Hair is more vulnerable when wet, and friction from moving against a pillow can cause the strands to weaken, resulting in breakage, split ends, and frizziness. Although this type of damage does not directly lead to hair loss, it can make hair appear thinner over time due to continuous breakage.

Experts assure that the occasional night of sleeping with wet hair is unlikely to cause significant harm, especially for those with a healthy scalp. However, making it a nightly routine could eventually affect both hair strength and scalp health.

To mitigate these risks, it is recommended to allow hair to air dry before sleeping or to use a hair dryer on a cool or low-heat setting to remove excess moisture. Keeping the scalp dry before bedtime can promote healthier hair and reduce the likelihood of irritation or microbial growth.
