Taiwan has taken a significant step in global disaster management by hosting international experts and officials for the launch of the World Alliance for Disaster Management (WADM) in Taipei. The initiative aims to enhance international disaster preparedness and response through collaborative efforts.
During the event, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang emphasized the necessity of global cooperation in managing disasters that transcend national borders. Lin highlighted the role of such partnerships in building resilience and improving overall preparedness.
The WADM seeks to bring together a diverse array of participants, including governments, emergency response agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. This collaboration is intended to foster improvements in disaster prevention, early warning systems, emergency responses, and post-disaster recovery efforts.
Reflecting on Taiwan’s own experiences, Interior Minister Liu pointed to the international aid received following the 1999 Jiji earthquake as a testament to the importance of global assistance. Liu further declared Taiwan’s readiness to contribute its own expertise in disaster response through professional training and joint exercises, offering support to alliance members.
As the alliance moves forward, it is expected to facilitate information sharing, enhance capacity building, and promote practical cooperation among its members. This global initiative underscores the critical role of international partnerships in managing and mitigating the impacts of disasters.
