The newly opened Shengji Tunnel in Taipei aims to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion in the region. Connecting Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park in Nangang District, the NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project is poised to improve transportation efficiency between Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City.
Spanning approximately 824 meters, with a 716-meter tunnel section, the Shengji Tunnel is designed to ease traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road. Commuters traveling between the research park and the vicinity of Nangang Station can now expect their travel time to decrease from 15-20 minutes to less than 10 minutes during peak hours.
In addition to enhancing daily commutes, the tunnel offers a critical alternative route during flooding or other emergencies, ensuring continued accessibility for the area. The design also incorporates a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting safer and more varied transportation options.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, established in 2018, has been a catalyst for growth in the region’s biomedical and biotechnology sectors, attracting over 2,600 researchers and professionals. The improved connectivity provided by the Shengji Tunnel is expected to further bolster the park’s role in driving innovation and economic activity in Nangang.
