During a recent diplomatic tour of the Nordic region, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was urged by leaders to leverage China’s influence to help resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This appeal was made during Wang’s meetings in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, where Nordic leaders emphasized the critical role China could play in facilitating a ceasefire and fostering peace negotiations with Russia.
In Oslo, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre specifically called on China to support efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire, while expressing concerns about Beijing’s economic ties with Moscow, notably through energy transactions. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide echoed this sentiment, noting that Nordic nations collectively encouraged China to advocate for unconditional negotiations with Russia.
The discussions during Wang Yi’s visit extended beyond the Ukraine conflict, covering a spectrum of issues including trade, climate collaboration, renewable energy, and Arctic affairs. Norwegian officials expressed the importance of cooperating with China in areas of mutual interest, but did not shy away from addressing sensitive topics such as national security, cybersecurity, and human rights issues in regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong.
China’s growing presence in the Arctic was also a focal point of the talks, reflecting the region’s strategic importance amid escalating geopolitical tensions. Wang Yi’s five-day visit highlighted China’s increasing engagement with the Nordic countries, as international diplomacy continues to adapt to shifting global dynamics.
