A new electric vehicle brand aimed at Japan’s market is on the horizon, thanks to a collaboration between Japanese and Chinese automotive firms. Yokohama-based EMT Co. has introduced the EMTA brand with plans to launch a compact electric kei car by 2027. This initiative taps into one of Japan’s key vehicle segments, where small, efficient cars are popular due to urban driving needs.

The venture, which combines the expertise of Japanese companies such as Autobacs Seven and Anest Iwata with Chinese automaker Chery Automobile, highlights a cross-border collaboration. The electric kei car will be designed and manufactured in China, while its planning and marketing will occur in Japan. EMT Co. aims to integrate advanced digital features into these vehicles, including wireless software updates, smartphone compatibility, and automated driving capabilities.

Kei cars, which constitute over a third of new vehicle sales in Japan, present an enticing opportunity for electric vehicle expansion. These cars are primarily used for short-distance travel, reducing concerns about driving range. EMT Co. also plans to leverage selected Autobacs stores as potential sales venues and is looking to roll out three more electric vehicle models by 2029. Future strategies might involve manufacturing in Japan and entering international markets.

The announcement arrives amid escalating competition in Japan’s kei EV sector. Chinese automaker BYD is set to introduce its Racco kei EV tailored for Japan, while Nissan Motor has broadened its Sakura series by adding a more affordable variant. Additionally, Suzuki Motor is on track to release a kei EV within the current fiscal year, and Honda Motor is preparing an electric N-Box model for a 2028 debut.

The increasing number of players underscores the growing momentum in Japan’s small electric vehicle market, where automakers vie to attract budget-conscious city drivers. This trend reflects a broader shift towards sustainable urban transportation solutions, as companies strive to gain a foothold in this rapidly evolving segment.
