Taiwan is ramping up its climate change response under the leadership of President Lai Ching-te, who recently presided over the eighth National Climate Change Committee meeting. The country has installed 508 offshore wind turbines, generating a total capacity of 4.9 gigawatts, positioning Taiwan among the global leaders in offshore wind energy. Moving forward, the government plans to focus on expanding renewable energy capabilities, strengthening the power grid, improving energy storage solutions, and developing local supply chains while maintaining environmental sustainability. In addition to energy initiatives, Lai stressed the need to protect Taiwan’s forests, farmland, rivers, wetlands, coastlines, and marine ecosystems. Such measures are vital for enhancing resilience against extreme weather events, flooding, rising sea levels, and agricultural disruptions. The president announced that climate adaptation strategies will be integrated into land-use planning and agricultural policies, aligning Taiwan’s climate actions with international environmental standards.
Throughout the meeting, officials from various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ocean Affairs Council, and Ministry of Economic Affairs, presented their reports. These covered topics such as environmental education, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem conservation, and long-term strategies for offshore wind development. The comprehensive discussions underscore Taiwan’s commitment to addressing climate challenges through coordinated efforts across multiple sectors.
