Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan has approved a NT$550 billion (US$17.93 billion) special budget to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs, paving the way for NT$10,000 cash handouts to citizens starting next month.

Finance Minister Chuang Tsui-yun confirmed that President William Lai is expected to promulgate the bill next week, after which the Ministry of Finance will announce the distribution details. Eligible recipients include Taiwanese citizens, permanent residents, and foreign spouses, with payments available through bank transfers, ATMs, post offices, and other official channels.

The final budget—formally titled the Special Act for Strengthening Economic, Social, and National Security Resilience—allocates NT$236 billion for handouts and NT$20 billion in reserve funds to support industries. Opposition parties made several minor reductions, including cuts to media and health insurance allocations.

Lawmakers across parties ultimately reached consensus, with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) emphasizing that the plan strengthens economic resilience, disaster preparedness, and social stability amid global uncertainty.
