Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has commenced a five-day state visit to Taiwan, marking his fourth trip to the island nation since taking office in 2021. The visit, aimed at bolstering bilateral relations and exploring opportunities for collaboration, underscores the ongoing engagement between Saint Lucia and Taiwan.
During his visit, Prime Minister Pierre is scheduled to meet with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te, along with other high-ranking officials, to discuss shared interests and future cooperation. President Lai plans to honor Pierre with a military ceremony, while Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will host a formal banquet in his honor.
Accompanying Prime Minister Pierre are Saint Lucia Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond. The delegation is also expected to visit several notable sites, including Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu.
Saint Lucia and Taiwan’s diplomatic ties date back to 1984, although relations were interrupted in 1997 when Saint Lucia switched recognition to Beijing. The countries restored diplomatic relations in April 2007, with Saint Lucia opting to maintain official ties with Taiwan rather than the People’s Republic of China.
This state visit offers a platform for both nations to reinforce diplomatic engagement and explore additional areas of cooperation, reflecting the ongoing commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship.
